Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists is currently seeking Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join their team!
Emergency Veterinary Assistant are under the direct guidance and supervision of the doctor. Incumbents of this position are required to assist the practitioners to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients of Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary specialists and to aid the practitioners in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Prepare for shifts by stocking drawers in exam rooms and treatment area. By setting up flush syringes, catheter kits and assuring that drugs and equipment are ready. Provide restraint of pets for examination and treatment by veterinarian. Prepare medications (both injections and dispensed medications) for both outpatients and inpatients. Log controlled substances.
- Help doctor administer anesthetics; prepare patients for surgery; monitor patients during surgery and recovery; assist in surgery; administer fluids; perform support therapy to patients in surgery and post-op;
- Properly clean, pack and autoclave all surgical materials after they are used. Keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
- Assist the doctor with treatment of patients; assist in medical or surgical procedures such as irrigating, cleansing, and bandaging wounds, administering and monitoring anesthesia for critical and injured animals, monitoring fluid administration and urine output, reading an ECG and blood pressure (Doppler and cardell), placing urinary and intravenous catheters, administering emergency medications and performing doctors’ orders in extreme emergency situations, and pain assessment.
- Keep accurate and timely charts of all patient progress and treatments. Enter all charges into the computer system during every shift.
- Perform clinical laboratory procedures such as blood chemistries, CBC, electrolytes, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, fungal cultures, draw blood for laboratory analysis. Prepare samples for shipment to laboratory and prepare laboratory forms. Perform other in-house tests such as parvo virus tests, and feline leukemia virus tests. Ensure patient records have test results recorded in them through CS.
- Take radiographs.
- Provide for the care and comfort of all patients in the ICU and kennels, including changing bedding, assessing pain and discomfort, and providing pain medications.
- Admit and discharge patients on the doctor’s orders, being especially careful to ensure that patients being discharged are well-groomed and in a medically appropriate state. Answer client questions one-on-one on various aspects of animal care up to, but not including, controversial items and/or those best left to the veterinarians. Pass on information/advice from the practitioners; explain dosage/purpose of medications; reinforce thorough discussion of the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home. Provide follow-up and updates on the progress of hospitalized patients with clients concerning certain patients; recommend additional visit and/or follow up with doctor’s recommendation if patient’s progress does not appear satisfactory.
- Assist the receptionist when necessary and assume her duties during her absence.
- Maintain an appropriate inventory of all supplies as dictated by the inventory control system. Inform inventory manager as needed about items that need to be ordered. Unpack boxes of medical supplies, check expiration dates, rotate stock and ensure that all ICU areas are appropriately stocked and clean. Make sure all products and literature are identified with labels. Keep abreast of over-the-counter products and their usage such as flea control and skin products, vitamins, and pet foods. Also understand usage and recommendations for prescription drugs.
- Maintain hospital cleanliness by performing cleaning tasks on daily, weekly and monthly lists that are located within the department.
CONTROLS OVER WORK
The practitioners provide continuing or individual assignments indicating generally what is to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines and priority of assignments. The practitioners provide additional, specific instructions for new, difficult or unusual assignments in animal health care, including suggested work methods or advice on source materials available. The ICU Technician uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the practitioner for decision or help. The practitioners assure that finished work and methods used are technically accurate and in compliance with instructions or established procedures. Review of the work increases with more difficult assignments, if the technician has not previously performed similar assignments. Administrative supervision may be provided by the Practice Manager and/ or Administrator.
ADVANCEMENT
Veterinary Technicians in this practice will be taught and trained to the limits of their potential. If, during training, an individual shows interest in a specific field, such as radiology or anesthesiology, continuing education in that field will be encouraged. Such encouragement may be in the form of a subsidy for taking outside courses or formal training given in the practice.

Position Overview
Emergency veterinary technicians are under the direct guidance and supervision of the doctor. INTRODUCTION
Intensive Care Unit veterinary technicians are under the direct guidance and supervision of the doctor. Incumbents of this position are required to assist the practitioners to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients of Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital and to aid the practitioners in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail.
MAJOR DUTIES

Prepare for shift by rounding with the previous ICU tech to familiarize yourself with all ICU patients so you can properly care for, treat, assess, and monitor all ICU patients.

Monitor patients chart and complete all upcoming treatments. This includes but is not limited to; preparing medications; both oral and injectable. Obtaining samples for diagnostics. Checking on patients well-being; that their bedding is clean and changed often, their water bowls (if allowed) are filled with fresh water and changed often, they are being offered appropriate food (if allowed) and monitored if eating well/normally. That all patients’ information (minor or major) is charted properly and on time in the patients’ record. Patients’ mentation is closely monitored for any minor changes or abnormalities.

Monitor patients vitals and know when to alert the doctor of any major changes. Input progress notes often to alert other techs/assts/doctors to changes made. Properly checking your charts and frequently looking for notes the doctor may have input and verifying that treatments your assistant may help you with are all accurately obtained and entered.

Proficiently place IVCs, monitor IVCs for puffy paws, improper taping, swelling above (SQ, vasculitis, phlebitis, etc), IVC care and site assessment. Monitoring and recording IVC timeframe/longevity.

Performing diagnostics (no blood draws from cephalic veins and all jug sticks have to be dr authorized): This includes but is not limited to: Blood pressures (Doppler and Cardell), Bloodwork: all vetlabs, I-stats, Coaggs, PCV/TS, Snap tests, Lepto witness, blood typing, blood cross matching, slide auto-agglutination, blood glucose check, collecting urine via catheter/cysto/free catch, collecting samples for send out labwork including knowing proper collection technique and proper collection tubes. Patients radiographs. Checking patient saturated oxygen levels.

Proficient in math/calculations: CRIs, fluid additives, injection doses, oral medication strengths, IV fluid boluses and times, IV fluid rates, etc.

Assist the doctor with treatment of patients; including but not limited to; placing NG/NE tubes, placing long term &/or multi-lumen catheter, placing urinary catheters, placing nasal oxygen prongs/canulas and starting supportive oxygen therapy, placing long term ECG pads and starting telemetry monitoring.

Properly, promptly, and knowledgeably run a CPR/code with a DVM. Being able to intubate a patient. Calculate, draw up, and administer ER drugs. Chart all info on CPR/code form. Properly bag/breathe for patient and give chest compressions. Attached all cardell telemetries to patient, asses that machine is working properly.

Keep proper flow of the ICU, making sure all treatments are completed before or at time due. Monitor charts and adjust appropriate treatments so that patients can rest appropriately and the flow remains achievable.

Ensure all emergency and CPR equipment and materials (anesthesia machine, suctions, ET tubes, ER drugs, telemtries, ambu bag/crash cart, etc) are available, prepared, and RTG for all emergency/CPRs for each shift.

Ensure that when patients are getting prepared for discharge, you verify times and properly complete treatments ahead if directed to, medications and or prescription diets are prepared for go home (if time allows your assistant to help with this), discharge instructions are properly filled out with next due times of all medications is applicable, patients IVC(s) is removed before or at time of leaving your ICU, all previous bandaged are removed if applicable, all patient/client belongings leave with patient. The person that discharges the patient is responsible then returning to clean the kennel/run. If ICU has time, they will clean it or at least strip it down for them.

Check monthly/weekly list and complete tasks when time allows. Check your personal ICU tasks and make sure it’s completed when due. Keep your room clean and organized at all times. Make sure you’re stocked with items you’ll need throughout your shift so you do not have to leave ICU often. Make sure your room is left this way when passing it onto the next ICU tech. Your assistant will be a huge role in helping with this, however no one is expect from cleaning/stocking. .

INTRODUCTION
Referral veterinary technicians are under the direct guidance and supervision of the doctor. Incumbents of this position are required to assist the practitioners to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients of Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital and to aid the practitioners in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Review oncology schedule and set up procedures/appointments for that day.
- Help doctor administer chemotherapy; prepare patients for treatment; monitor patients during and after chemotherapy is administered; release patient to owner and educate clients as needed of home care procedures.
- Administer and monitor anesthesia to sometimes compromised patients; prepare and assist in surgical procedures; place IV catheters; administer fluids; recover patients post-op and properly turn patient over to ICU nurses as needed.
- Properly clean, pack and autoclave all surgical materials after they are used. Keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
- Keep accurate and timely charts of all patient progress and treatments. Enter all charges into the computer system, ensuring that the in-hospital tracking form is updated.

- Take, process and submit all radiographs to VDIC for review.
- Admit and discharge patients on the doctor’s orders, being especially careful to ensure that patients being discharged are well-groomed and in a medically appropriate state.
- Answer client questions one-on-one on various aspects of animal care up to, but not including, controversial items and/or those best left to the veterinarians.
- Pass on information/advice from the practitioners; explain dosage/purpose of medications; reinforce thorough discussion of the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home.
- Provide follow-up and updates on the progress of hospitalized patients with clients concerning certain patients; recommend additional visit and/or follow up with doctor’s recommendation if patient’s progress does not appear satisfactory.
- Maintain an appropriate inventory of all supplies as dictated by the inventory control system. Inform inventory manager as needed about items that need to be ordered. Also understand usage and recommendations for prescription drugs.
CONTROLS OVER WORK
The practitioners provide continuing or individual assignments indicating generally what is to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines and priority of assignments. The practitioners provide additional, specific instructions for new, difficult or unusual assignments in animal health care, including suggested work methods or advice on source materials available. The referral technician uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the practitioner for decision or help. The practitioners assure that finished work and methods used are technically accurate and in compliance with instructions or established procedures. Review of the work increases with more difficult assignments, if the technician has not previously performed similar assignments. Administrative supervision may be provided by the Practice Manager and/ or Administrator.
ADVANCEMENT
Veterinary Technicians in this practice will be taught and trained to the limits of their potential. If, during training, an individual shows interest in a specific field, such as radiology or anesthesiology, continuing education in that field will be encouraged. Such encouragement may be in the form of a subsidy for taking outside courses or formal training given in the practice.

INTRODUCTION
Emergency veterinary technicians are under the direct guidance and supervision of the doctor. Incumbents of this position are required to assist the practitioners to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients of Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary specialists and to aid the practitioners in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail.
MAJOR DUTIES

Prepare for shifts by stocking drawers in exam rooms and treatment area. By setting up flush syringes, catheter kits and assuring that drugs and equipment are ready. Provide restraint of pets for examination and treatment by veterinarian. Prepare medications (both injections and dispensed medications) for both outpatients and inpatients. Log controlled substances.

Help doctor administer anesthetics; prepare patients for surgery; monitor patients during surgery and recovery; assist in surgery; administer fluids; perform support therapy to patients in surgery and post-op;

Properly clean, pack and autoclave all surgical materials after they are used. Keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.

Assist the doctor with treatment of patients; assist in medical or surgical procedures such as irrigating, cleansing, and bandaging wounds, administering and monitoring anesthesia for critical and injured animals, monitoring fluid administration and urine output, reading an ECG and blood pressure (Doppler and cardell), placing urinary and intravenous catheters, administering emergency medications and performing doctors’ orders in extreme emergency situations, and pain assessment.

Keep accurate and timely charts of all patient progress and treatments. Enter all charges into the computer system during every shift.

Unpack boxes of medical supplies, check expiration dates, rotate stock and ensure that all ICU areas are appropriately stocked and clean. Make sure all products and literature are identified with labels. Keep abreast of over-the-counter products and their usage such as flea control and skin products, vitamins, and pet foods. Also understand usage and recommendations for prescription drugs.

Maintain hospital cleanliness by performing cleaning tasks on daily, weekly and monthly lists that are located within the department.

INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this position is to assist the RVT Tech 1’s in the surgery department to ensure that all clients and patients are cared for with efficiency, compassion, and care. The primary focus of the Tech 2 will be client communication, schedule efficiency, and assisting with patient surgery and recovery.
MAJOR DUTIES
Surgery days
- Review surgery schedule in Cornerstone the day before and discuss flow of patient load with Tech 1. Determine the order of patients and how dismissals and appointments will be scheduled.
- Update surgery board with surgery coordinator; ensure surgery coordinator knows the order of patient surgery; alert surgery coordinator of any client communication that needs to happen before, during, or after surgery
- Immediately upon arrival, round with ICU technician on any surgery patients in ICU with the goal of updating DVM when they arrive for the day;
- Immediately upon arrival, determine any dismissals for the day; review dismissal instructions with DVM to ensure no changes are needed; ensure medications are made up and ready to go; ensure appropriate dismissal appointment is scheduled in Cornerstone and matches surgery dismissal board
- Set up surgery suite for first surgery before induction; ensure all necessary instrumentation is present and set up, including arthroscopy, laparoscopy, ortho packs, laptop, and digital radiology computer; if rDVM films are necessary, ensure that they are loaded and ready to go for surgery
- Assist Tech 1 with patient prep; must be able to place IV catheters, perform peripheral venipuncture; give SQ and IM injections of pain meds/ pre-meds
- Must be able to perform drug dosage calculations (must be signed off by Tech 1)
- Assist doctor with surgical procedures (Scrub nurse); ability to monitor Grade 1 and 2 patients safely during anesthesia(must be checked off by Tech 1)
- While Tech 1 recovers patient in ICU, assist 2nd Tech 1 with 2nd patient prep OR
- Enter all charges for surgery to Cornerstone from the surgical flow sheet and tracking form; write/ finish homecare instructions according to DVM instructions; make up prescription medications or call in to pharmacy (must be checked off by Tech 1)
Appointment days (first 4 tasks of the day are the same)
- Review appointment schedule in Cornerstone the day before and discuss flow of patient load with Tech 1. Determine the order of patients and how dismissals and surgeries will be scheduled.
- Update surgery board with surgery coordinator; ensure surgery coordinator knows the order of patient surgery; alert surgery coordinator of any client communication that needs to happen before, during, or after surgery

- Before appointments begin, thoroughly clean and stock both surgery exam rooms; ensure that surgery CT area and hallway (anything a client will see) are clean and free from clutter
- Begin Cornerstone reports for every patient being seen each day
- Before seeing pet, load rDVM radiographs and/or ensure films from rDVM are available for review
- Check in patients and clients for rechecks/ consults; take a brief history in the exam room and relay to DVM
- Assist doctors with consultations; educate and answer client questions regarding surgery and aftercare of patients
- Assist with radiographs, labs, etc during exam
- Use travel sheet to enter all exam charges
- Schedule next recheck appointment with client before they leave the hospital if possible- this can be done in the exam room
- Walk client to front desk
- Clean room and make ready for next appointment
Other duties
- Clean and sterilize all instruments, gloves, drapes and equipment used, so that it will be ready the next time they are needed.
- Keep log of all surgeries done
- Take surgery department inventory on a bi-weekly basis and provide list to inventory manager
- Review sterilization dates on bone instruments and orthopedic implants and inventory/ re-sterilize as needed
- Maintain all anesthetic machines, autoclave, and any other equipment used in surgery
- Thoroughly clean surgery room and area weekly
Knowledge and Skills
The qualified applicant will possess the following knowledge and skills:
Required
- Knowledge of basic veterinary practices, procedures and terminology with willingness to pursue further education leading to Registered Veterinary Technician status
- Ability to appropriately handle animals up to 70 lbs., and perform routine veterinary medical procedures (i.e. collect samples, draw blood, administer vaccines, etc)
- Education equivalent to two years of college or technical school
- At least one year of recent experience in veterinary practice or medical environment with increasing responsibilities
- Internal applicants must have a meets expectation or better in their current position and approval of current supervisor prior to applying for position
- Excellent client communication skills
- Organizational and time management skills
Preferred
- Education equivalent to two years college (pre-veterinary curriculum) or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
- Three years of recent experience in veterinary practice with increasing responsibilities.

Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists is currently seeking Wards Assistants (Kennel) Swing to join their team!
Job Summary:
Under direction of lead technicians/lead assistants, provides for the constant cleanliness of cages, runs, and all areas of the hospital. Ensures proper feeding and patient care of all hospitalized animals assigned. Assists in all departments.
Specific Duties:

Provides attentive, thorough and compassionate care to all patients, including but not limited to: boarding, pre and post anesthesia, pre and post radiation therapy, stray or lost animals, and cats receiving radioactive iodine therapy.

Cleans and sanitizes all cages, runs, wards and related areas including dog park and walkways;
-
Gives baths (ordinary cleansing, medicated) and does whatever grooming may be necessary to the treatment and constant cleanliness of each animal;
-
Recognizes and records any unusual condition or abnormal behavior of any hospitalized animal; observes animals recovering from anesthesia;
-
Feeds and medicates each animal as prescribed by the attending D.V.M. and records appetites; keeps kitchen area clean and neat.

Receives animals to be admitted for hospital care and is responsible for their proper identification and for recording their respective locations;
-
Releases animals to their owners as directed by the attending doctor and technician and insures that every animal released is clean, properly groomed and has all required medications or belongings.

Assists doctors, technicians, assistants and other personnel with the administration of medications, patient restraint, and any other duties as requested.

Responsible for laundry for the hospital including wards, ICU, surgery and treatment.

Assist in overall hospital cleaning and organization.

Water plants in the planters in the front and back of the hospital.

Empty the trash and sweep in the front of the building in the morning and in the evening. Wash down front walk of the hospital.

Enters accurate charges for all the patients in wards in a timely fashion.

Assist in unloading and checking in pet food orders when they arrive from the vendors.
-
Separate out and tag any special orders, and call the owners to let them know their food has arrived.

Distribute any food ordered for in house use to the proper places.

Add other new food to stock by rotating the old food to the front and the new food to the back. Clean and organize food storage areas, maintaining safety and cleanliness standards at all times.

Completing task lists in a timely manner.

Checking in with all departments and/or leads before you leave.
Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge Of:
-
Cleaning and disinfecting methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment; infectious disease protocol;

Proper methods of animal handling and restraint;

Ability To:
-
Sympathetically and patiently treat sick and injured animals;
-
Learn to administer medications and recognize abnormal conditions;
-
Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency;
-
Perform moderately heavy physical labor including: ability to lift up to 50lbs without assistance, standing, squatting, bending and kneeling for extended periods of time.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
-
Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work;

Education: Equivalent to completion of 12th grade
Desirable Qualifications:
- Knowledge of: Basic pharmacology; supplemental courses in the field of Biological Science, Anatomy, and Physiology, Nursing, Medical Assisting or Veterinary Technology;
- Experience: Some customer service. Animal related. Previous experience in a veterinary hospital or related medical field.
Schedule:
- 3PM - 11:30PM from Tuesday to Saturday
- Must be able to work a weekend shift every week and some holidays.
